A step deeper
The fourth commandment (of the Ten Commandments) says - "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." Exodus 20:8-11 What does that commandment mean? As we think that through, let's make some observations: Observation #1 The church does not function with the laws that governed Israel. Old Testament laws had a specific time and place - Israel. When Israel dissolved as a nation the laws no longer functioned in a specific time and place. Observation #2 The Ten Commandments reflect God's character. So, while many Old Testament laws were specific to Israel, we cannot ignore the Ten Commandments as they reveal God's character. Observation #3 God rested, that is he "sabbathed", as part of his creation of the world. Genesis 1:31-2:2 states, "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morningthe sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work." Did the all powerful Lord God need time to recuperate from his work of creation? That was my answer too. So what did the sabbath rest mean for God? What did God "do" when he took a sabbath rest in Genesis 2:2? Observation #4 From God's perspective his creation would be incomplete without a sabbath rest. Observation #5 On what day were Adam and Eve made by God? So, what were they to do the very next day? Observation #6 If sabbath rest was not meant to recharge your life after a hard week at work (although that would no doubt be a side effect) what then was the sabbath meant to accomplish? Observation #7 What do you think Jesus meant in Mark 2:27, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath"? Observation #8 How does our obsession for time management spoil sabbath rest? What is the difference between a true sabbath rest and leisure? What role would the Bible and prayer play in a sabbath rest? Why do you think that the command for a sabbath rest is the most ignored of the Ten Commandments? Back to Part One |
